Established in 1994, AFL SportsReady (AFL SR) is an independent, not-for-profit company which is dedicated to helping young Australians to develop careers through traineeships, direct employment programs, cadetships and educational opportunities.

We have kick-started the careers of approximately 14,000 jobseekers, including over 2,000 Indigenous Australians, and supported hundreds of organisations and businesses right across Australia.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program, Warumilang, represents the support and opportunities created for Indigenous people through quality education and employment. We focus on strengthening relationships, promoting respect and creating employment and education opportunities for  Indigenous peoples. and communities.

About the role

This position has been identified as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander position in accordance with the provisions of Section 14a of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.  Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates are eligible to apply for this position.

THE OPPORTUNITY

AFL SportsReady is seeking to appoint an extensively experienced senior manager in our newly created position of General Manager – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement.   Working as part of AFL SR’s senior leadership team, this is a critical role for building strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, government and non-government organisations.  It is responsible for developing new business partnerships nationally to support the successful delivery and growth of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience building and leading strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Previous experience and drive to grow and build new business partnerships and relationships.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

The key purpose of this role is to strengthen and expand AFL SR’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and Employment programs.  As part of this role, the key areas of responsibility are:

  1. Establish new business partnerships, strengthen existing relationships with employers and other stakeholders including government.
  2. Lead work to establish, maintain and grow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community partnerships and relationships, by engaging with a range of community peak bodies, organisations and other key stakeholders.
  3. Provide leadership, facilitate and grow AFL SR’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff network, including providing input to staff development programs.
  4. Support work to review and improve AFL SR’s current programs, and help to implement any changes to programs. Play a lead role in expanding and implementing AFL SR’s philanthropic programs, ‘the Ready Foundation’.
  5. Lead work on coordinating and communicating AFL SR’s second Reconciliation Action Plan.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Desired experience and knowledge

  • Demonstrated extensive experience and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and employment programs and services
  • Demonstrated extensive experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships with a range of stakeholder groups including government to deliver education and employment programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a cross functional senior management team to deliver employment and/or education programs.
  • Knowledge of the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

Desired skills and abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Excellent verbal skills, public speaking and presentation capabilities.
  • Excellent written skills
  • Strong ability to work at a strategic and an operational level.
  • Capacity to envision, articulate and operationalise strategy and plans.
  • Proven organisational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines and targets.
