About the organisation

Organisation Name : North Sydney Community Service Ltd trading as The Crows Nest Centre

North Sydney Community Service Ltd, trading as The Crows Nest Centre, is a not-for-profit company and registered charity. We provide a range of in-home and centre based services to older people, people with a disability, migrants, parents and people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Services for older people and people with a disability include meals on wheels, linen, assisted shopping, social and recreational activities, a community restaurant and special events.

Migrants are encouraged to join English conversation, homework help, employment workshops, Japanese or Spanish speaking mothers, Persian morning tea, Chinese seniors or Bollywood music. Parent education seminars target new parents and a community shower is available for people who are homeless or at risk.

The Centre is supported by Commonwealth, State and Local Government as well as local schools, churches, businesses, service clubs, individuals and other agencies. It operates under a Joint Plan of Management with North Sydney Council and is located in a Council owned community centre, in the heart of the Crows Nest shopping area.

In recent years the Crows Nest Centre has been impacted by Commonwealth aged care reform and the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the population in Crows Nest St Leonards will grow by more than 50%, over the next 20 years.

Day to day management of CNC is the responsibility of the Centre’s Executive Officer. The Executive Officer reports to the Board. The Board provides strategic advice and ensures the Centre operates in accordance with CNC’s strategic plan and approved budget.

The Board meets seven times a year on the last Tuesday of the month between February and November. A Finance and Risk Committee provides advice to the Board.

About the role

The CNC Board is looking for people with enthusiasm to contribute to the growth and development of the Centre and who have a strong commitment to community services. Ideally, they live in the Lower North Shore area of Sydney served by the Crows Nest Centre, and have practical knowledge and experience with the changing demographics of the area and its impact on the service needs of the community. In its deliberations, the board draws on directors’ skills in the areas of community services and aged care delivery, HR, governance, risk management, finance, quality systems, volunteering, government relations and organisational development. The preferred persons will be those who can make an active contribution to the board, are able to think laterally and strategically, and be able to contribute effectively to board discussions and decision making. It would be advantageous for the successful persons to have previous experience as a non-executive director of other community based and / or not for profit organisations.
