About the organisation

Organisation Name : Human Nature Adventure Therapy

At Human Nature Adventure Therapy, our core focus is supporting vulnerable, at-risk youth aged between 14 and 19, primarily from the Northern Rivers region in NSW.

These are young people who may be struggling with:

  • mental health issues,
  • childhood trauma,
  • drug and alcohol problems,
  • behavioural difficulties and
  • social exclusion.

We select participants who demonstrate the most significant need and are most likely to benefit from what the program offers. We work closely with their families, schools and relevant supporting agencies including foster care agencies, juvenile justice, youth services, drug and alcohol services.

Our current lead program Recre8 guides disengaged young people through a four-month therapeutic process using the innovative treatment methodology of Bush Adventure Therapy (BAT). It involves extensive expeditions into nature, where young people are facilitated to explore themselves safely and find new ways of thinking and behaving. Participants encounter, embrace and overcome obstacles, discovering their inner resilience and ability to create positive relationships. At the heart of this journey is a challenging and supportive wilderness expedition.

Our Recre8 Programs are all individually designed and run by an experienced and committed team of psychologists, counsellors, mentors, volunteers and outdoor leadership professionals.  Bush Adventure Therapy (or Wilderness Therapy) is a well-respected methodology that is increasingly widely used internationally, particularly in the US. There it has a longstanding therapeutic reputation having been used since the 1940’s. It harnesses the healing power of Nature and demonstrates how human beings benefit from this essential relationship. In a world where time outdoors is rapidly decreasing, this is of great importance to the health and wellbeing of our young people.

We are a member of the Australian Association for Bush Adventure Therapy in Australia.

An exciting opportunity exists to become a member of Human Nature Adventure Therapy Ltd.’s Board of Directors. We are looking for several highly skilled, experienced, passionate and visionary leaders to complement our current board of directors. You will play a vital role in advising, governing and leading the development of this vibrant organisation as it transitions from start-up phase into the next phase of strategic growth.

The staff team has the program end of the business covered, uniquely and holistically supporting young people to transform their lives.  We need your skills, experience and wisdom to support them to do this life-changing work by sharing your wisdom and experience in areas like business management and planning, finance, risk management, the law, people and culture, volunteer program design, fundraising strategy, digital media and marketing, and organisational sustainability.

This volunteer role will appeal to people who are passionate about contributing to the growth of a high impact program that offers new beginnings for young people who are really struggling as they live with trauma and disadvantage.

We are looking for directors with experience gained in business, government, education, community services, psychology, philanthropy, fundraising, marketing, and/or the nonprofit sector, and with a passion for changing the outcome for our most vulnerable and at-risk youth.

  • Help to grow our network of stakeholders and supporters,
  • Serve on at least one Board committee and participate actively in its work,
