Redfern Legal Centre works to redress inequalities in the legal system that adversely and disproportionately affect people experiencing vulnerability. The Centre pursues social change and law reform to reduce these inequalities.

About the role

The primary responsibility of the Solicitor is to manage a team of corporate partners to provide credit and debt legal advice and casework to victims of financial abuse. This includes making applications to waive debts on the grounds of domestic violence and financial hardship; making complaints of irresponsible lending to internal and external dispute resolution processes; conducting advocacy and negotiation with banks, lending institutions, telecommunications companies and utility companies on behalf of clients; and advising and acting on unconscionable conduct and unfair contracts claims. The solicitor will also contribute to the community legal education, law reform and policy work of the project.  The solicitor will supervise, train, and mentor solicitors seconded by the corporate partners to provide this service.

Status: full time (35 hours), permanent

Salary and benefits: $85,442 – $93,328 p.a. depending on qualifications and experience.

Superannuation and annual leave loading is paid in addition to this and salary packaging* is available. In addition to being a flexible workplace, RLC offers a 35 hour working week, time in lieu options and a paid Christmas closure of 2 weeks (including public holidays) on top of 4 weeks annual leave.

*As a Public Benevolent Institution, Redfern Legal Centre is able to offer staff generous salary packaging options. The tax savings for a staff member choosing to take full advantage of the salary packaging option mean that their take home salary may be increased by up to $6,000 per annum.
