About the organisation

Organisation Name : Plan International Australia

Plan International Australia tackles the root causes of poverty, supports communities through crisis, campaigns for gender equality, and helps governments do what is right for children and particularly for girls. We’ve been doing this for over 80 years, but we don’t do it alone. We bring people together to create change that lasts, and we view the children, families and local communities we work with as our partners and our equals.

About the role

  • Dream job focused on promoting children’s rights and equality for girls at Plan International Australia, the charity for girls’ equality
  • Senior leadership role as a member of the Executive Team, reporting to the CEO
  • Develop the brand and profile of a leading international NGO, while creating systemic change for children and girls through advocacy and campaigning
  • 10-month fixed-term contract (parental leave cover), mid-February to mid-December 2020
  • Supportive and progressive work culture, with potential for part-time or flexible working arrangements for the right candidate

This is a rare opportunity to step into an executive leadership role at one of Australia’s leading international NGOs, with a growing profile and a bold approach to creating change through communications, advocacy and programs.

The Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement plays a key role within the Executive Team, reporting to the CEO. You will lead a passionate, high-performing department comprising four teams: brand and strategic communications; media and ambassador relations; campaigns and community; and policy, advocacy and government relations.

This role exists to build support for tackling injustices facing girls and the most marginalised children with government and public audiences. It is responsible for bringing about policy and practice change at the political and government level that prioritises children and particularly girls, and for raising Plan International Australia’s profile in this area.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of improving brand awareness through a creative approach to media, partnerships, digital and marketing strategies. You will also have experience creating change through policy, research and public campaigning, with a strong understanding of strategies and tactics for influencing change in international development, gender equality or a similar field. Experience working with young people to drive change would be desirable.

Plan International Australia has recently adopted a new three-year strategic plan that sets out how we will deepen our impact, strengthen financial sustainability and promote gender equality in all we do. Working in close coordination with the Executive Team, particularly the Director of Programs and the Director of Fundraising, you will oversee the implementation of this strategy, championing collaboration and alignment between departments.

To succeed in this role, you will need to be comfortable operating in a flexible and creative environment of testing and learning, whilst also being strategic in your prioritisation and long-term planning. You will have an appetite for bold, passionate communications and campaigns, whilst also managing risk, reputation and compliance.

This is a role for someone who believes in cultivating leaders, supporting the development of those around you, championing equality and inclusion, and celebrating progress. Our culture means a lot to us.

We believe a better world is possible. A world where all children can live happy and healthy lives, and where girls can take their rightful place as equals. This is the world you will be helping us create.
