The four pillars of the Whitlam Institute are: The Whitlam Prime Ministerial Collection; its public policy program; its public affairs (education & outreach) program; and responsibility for the historic Female Orphan School [FOS].
About the role
The Whitlam Institute within Western Sydney University is looking for an experienced communications professional to manage our public affairs, communications and media engagement as part of its Management Team.
The Whitlam Institute exists for all Australians who care about what matters in a fair Australia. We bridge the historical legacy of Gough Whitlam’s years in public life and the contemporary relevance of the Whitlam Program to public discourse and policy. The Whitlam Institute at the Female Orphan School is now rapidly growing into a vibrant, multifaceted centre of ideas, culture and arts, all within one of the most significant heritage sites in Australia.
We have a great opportunity for an experienced and motivated Communications Manager to join our small team at an exciting time in the development of the Institute and its public programs.
The Communications Manager will have:
- Strong leadership and management experience and an ability to build effective teams
- High level personal, verbal and written communication skills
- Strong strategic and analytic skills
- Professional experience in media, marketing and/or publicity and in the design and delivery high quality communications
- Good understanding of the Australian political landscape
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people and interests.
This is a full-time, ongoing position based at the Parramatta South campus.
It is a mandatory requirement for any incumbent of this position to have a current NSW employee working with children clearance in accordance with the NSW Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.

Remuneration Package: Higher Education Worker Level 8 – $118,508 to $131,558 p.a. (comprising Salary $100,141 to $111,168 p.a. plus 17% Superannuation, plus Leave Loading).
