The Wilderness Society performs significant fundraising, campaigning and service support functions towards the achievement of its Purpose, goals and objectives.

About the role

Our Board plays a crucial governance role for the organisation and comprises up to nine volunteer Directors, two of which may be Appointed Directors. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from those with financial skills to complement the existing skill set of the Board and support the valuable work of The Wilderness Society. As leaders in the organisation, Directors work directly with the Executive.

Expressions of interest in nominating for election to the Board are sought from experienced individuals with

  • demonstrated commitment to the natural environment;
  • a commitment to and understanding of good governance and previous experience on a board or management committee; 
  • professional body membership (such as ICAA/CPA);
  • ability to engage in financial strategy development in our dynamic organisation,  including demonstrated experience in maintaining overview of organisational financial status and sustainability; and
  • ability to maintain oversight of good financial and risk management practices and the implementation of these to satisfy internal and external requirements.

Excellent business and financial acumen will be highly regarded, including expertise in business leadership and/or strategic direction. Membership of the AICD would be highly valued.

Commitment Required

The Wilderness Society Ltd Directors serve a three-year term with eligibility for reappointment. 

The Board currently meets most months by videoconference on the last Tuesday of the month (8pm Eastern time) and face to face approximately once a year on a weekend (travel provided). A further requirement for this role is as a member of the Finance Audit Risk and Compliance Committee of the Board (monthly meetings). The time commitment for our Directors is approximately 12 hours per month, including relevant meeting preparation.

There is no requirement to be located in any specific location as The Wilderness Society is a national organisation with Directors from across the country, however financial membership of the organisation is a requirement for all nominees to the Board.
