Organisation Name : Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS)

With an administrative hub based in Newman, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) provides holistic primary health care to the individuals and families within the remote Aboriginal communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

PAMS has over 700 registered clients, with most being Martu. Services offered include primary health care, health education and promotion programs and initiatives, as well as the monitoring and management of ongoing health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, ante-natal & post-natal care and child health.

The Remote Area Nurse (RAN) will report to the Clinical Manager – Remote Services and will work across the 4 remote sites of PAMS on a fly-in, fly-out roster. The RANs are an important part of the Health Services Team and the role is to provide the highest standards of care to clients of the service through the provision of comprehensive primary health care services. We are currently looking for an experienced RAN to join our team on a permanent, full time basis.

About You

To be considered favourably for this position, you will have:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse
  • At least 3 years post graduate experience in Nursing, demonstrating a sound clinical background in a Primary Health Care setting
  • Prior experience as a RAN
  • An understanding and a commitment to the principles of Primary Health Care and Community Development
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate nursing care programs in a remote primary health setting
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitivity with Aboriginal people
  • A demonstrated understanding of the unique issues affecting and impacting on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people
  • Experience, skills and knowledge working in a multidisciplinary team, including teamwork and conflict management
  • Sound working knowledge of computer software packages, ideally Communicare
  • Previous experience living/working in remote locations
  • An ability to work, reside and travel independently in a remote region.

The position involves working with a multicultural organisation where the majority of staff, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with remote Aboriginal communities and make a drastic impact to the health and well-being outcomes of these communities.

PAMS operates four remote sites, three of which have a team of one nurse and a range of ancillary workers. Please note that these positions are single clinician posts. Although the successful candidate will have a substantive location they must be prepared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS operates in some of the most remote parts of Australia and staff are required to be proficient at driving a 4WD vehicle and willing to fly in light aircraft. Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require an unrestricted WA “C” Class Driver’s Licence, and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) and Working with Childre n Check prior to appointment.
