About the role

  • Lead and advocate legal services for Aboriginal people who live in Tasmania
  • Promote the interests of communities at a national, state and local level
  • Hobart or Launceston based, full or part time, relocation assistance available
The Organisation

 
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) was established in 2020, marking the return of ownership of Tasmanian Aboriginal legal services to communities and the state. TALS is funded under the National Legal Assistance Program.

TALS services include criminal, civil, and family law, providing culturally safe, holistic and appropriate services that are inclusive and open to all Aboriginal Tasmanians. TALS also advocates for justice, equality and human rights.

The Role
 
You will help shape TALS’ future, leading the service through its transition to a stand-alone communities-controlled organisation. You will be integral in driving the strategy and the operational management ensuring a high quality response to the legal and related needs of Tasmania’s Aboriginal communities.

You will also lead the advocacy for justice, equality and legal rights including influencing policy development and law reform and you will be responsible for the:

  • Inspirational and confident leadership of the organisation
  • Development and nurturing of government and non-government sector relationships
  • Compliance, funding and associated reporting requirements
  • Best practice governance and risk management

Skills Required
 
TALS considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position and it is therefore only available to people that identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

You have significant leadership, management and governance experience ideally developed in a career within community law, advocacy, campaigning, politics, and/or human services with a specialty in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander services.

Your previous experience will have given you a good understanding of the sector’s challenges and the ability to connect with and promote the interests of communities at a national, state and local level.  A track record in reporting to a board, organisational development, capacity building, strategy delivery, managing funded service models and developing partnerships and stakeholder relationships will be key to your success.
