FIXED-TERM, FULL-TIME JOB VACANCY
SENIOR MANAGER

Development and Outreach Department
Location: Sydney (Preferable) or Melbourne

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Senior Manager to develop relationships with donors and prospects and represent the work of Human Rights Watch within Australia. This is a one year fixed-term, full-time position for parental leave coverage, with an anticipated start in June 2021. The position is based in Sydney (preferable) or Melbourne and reports to the Director of Australia based in Sydney and the Senior Director of Development and Outreach based in Geneva.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely. We recognize that this moment, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Represent the work of Human Rights Watch to existing and prospective supporters and maintain financial support in Australia by soliciting major gifts and general support funds; 
  2. Cultivate, service and solicit individual donors, prospects and Committee members in Sydney and Melbourne;
  3. Manage the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Sydney and Melbourne, including the annual Voices for Justice dinner, researcher briefings, film screenings, advocacy and cultivation events;
  4. Oversee event logistics including tracking and maintaining agreed budgets, branding elements, materials, and follow-up;
  5. Develop relationships with Australia Committee members, help support the activities of our Outreach Committees;
  6. Manage all aspects of the Australia Committee including committee meetings, executive meetings, sub-committee meetings, and communications; 
  7. Oversee gift processing and donor support services for Australia in Salesforce, including but not limited to: mailings, gift tracking and acknowledgments;
  8. Supervise support staff in the Sydney office, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, and ensuring balanced workload;
  9. Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into the division’s work; and
  10. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.

 

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in human rights, corporate communications, or philanthropy is required. An advanced degree in a related field is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising or relevant experience and demonstrated success in overseeing events are required.

 

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Proven success in creating and managing major gifts programs and ability to manage high-level donor relationships are required.
  2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are
  3. The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities, working effectively toward deadlines is
  4. Ability to effectively manage and engage a variety of volunteers, committee members, and board members is required.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within Human Rights Watch as well as with external partners are
  6. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are
  7. Experience coordinating events, preferably large-scale events, is
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is
  9. An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly
  10. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of Human Rights Watch is required.
  11. Familiarity with fundraising in Australia is strongly preferred.

 

Duration: Fixed-term employment for a one-year period.

Other: Applicants for this role must possess valid Australian work authorization.
