About the organisation
Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB) is a for-purpose organisation with our National Office and staff team located in Melbourne and volunteer chapters in Victoria, Western Australia, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and ACT.
EWB works within Australia and overseas to improve the knowledge and physical resources of people in need via grassroots engineering programs, capacity development, and sector leadership.
Established in Australia in 2004, EWB has three major focus areas:
- developing technology to alleviate poverty and accelerate inclusive sustainable development in Australia and overseas;
- redefining engineering as a profession providing stewardship and leadership for a more equitable and sustainable world and;
- inspiring and mobilising a global community who believe in a world where technology benefits all.
At EWB, we strongly believe that every engineer can be a change agent for a socially just and sustainable world. This belief drives EWB to lead a movement of like-minded individuals and companies working together to ensure technology is developed to make the world a better place for all.
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the EWB Engineering team. This engineering role develops and adapts technologies to support community aspirations, and ensure no-one is left behind. At the same time, you will be testing and refining EWB’s engineering technology development approach, which provides a framework for EWB and its partners to develop appropriate, equitable and sustainable technologies with and for communities.
The technology development approach is the key mechanism for EWB’s Engineering Program and it is used to leverage mechanisms, from the EWB network including pro bono and skilled volunteer support, to develop and deliver impactful technologies.
This role will not only look at the development of the technologies themselves but also how they could be implemented to achieve the most impact through appropriate and sustainable scaling. One such mechanism will involve the exploration of social enterprise.
As with all sustainable solutions, it is essential to build local capacity, accessible supply chains and maintenance structures.
