Campaigner

The Campaigner is part of the Climate Council’s campaigns team. In this role you’ll have the opportunity to work with multiple teams on a diverse range of activities including community engagement, media, research, policy analysis and political advocacy.  You will execute campaign tactics as part of the Climate Council’s Extreme Weather program, with the objective of  driving home the urgency of the climate crisis through a constant and loud drumbeat of communications, research and policy engagement. The Campaigner also works closely with the Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) to catalyse all levels of government to act on climate change.  

This role reports to the Campaigns Director. 

Key responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Campaigner role include:

• Stakeholder engagement. Support and maintain the Climate Council’s growing relationships with government, business and industry, academic, media and community.  Work collaboratively with diverse sector partners to execute coordinated campaigns. 
• Campaign tactics. Develop campaign tactics for extreme weather in alignment with the Climate Council Strategy, and in consultation with the Campaigns Director and Emergency Leaders for Climate Action membership. 
• Policy development and recommendations. In collaboration with the Research and wider Campaigns team, assist with policy research and the development of recommendations for decision-makers. 
• Media support. Assisting our in-house media team with reactive media, generating new media opportunities and crafting media releases.
• Events coordination. Coordinate virtual and physical events when they are relevant to campaign outcomes in partnership with the operations and community teams. 
• Writing content. Prepare high quality written content; from event agendas and emails to political briefers and talking points
• Contribute positively to building the Climate Council culture and mission.

About you

The successful candidate will have: 

Campaign, policy and/or communications experience. 

• A minimum of 3 or more years’ of demonstrated experience in campaign, policy and/or communications. 
• Demonstrated skills in developing and executing online/offline campaign tactics.
• Political advocacy experience at the state or federal level will be considered favourably.  
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to distil complex issues for a lay audience.

Strong stakeholder and project management skills. 

• Track record of project and/or program management experience in the delivery of campaigns or related activities.
• Proven ability to maintain strong working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and organisations, particularly politicians and their advisers. 
• Ability to adapt and respond positively in circumstances where priorities need to shift quickly.

You’re passionate about tackling climate change. You care about driving down Australia’s greenhouse gas pollution and ramping up renewables. You’ve got experience working in climate change or the social justice sector. 

Remuneration and Benefits

• Annual salary of  $75k- $80k + super (contingent on experience)

• Full time, two year contract 

• Melbourne preferred but will consider Sydney based candidates
• Split of working from home/working from our offices in either Melbourne CBD or Sydney Surry Hills.
