About the organisation

Organisation Name : Carinya Society

Carinya Society was originally established 60+ years ago by local families of people with disabilities, living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.  It is a registered charity and a membership based company. Each week over 100 NDIS participants use its services.  Current turnover is $5m+ and there are 60+ employees.

The implementation of the NDIS over the last 8 years has influenced the approach to service delivery for people living with disability.  Organisations like Carinya Society want to offer more choice to those who have restricted choices and sometimes very complex situations with regard to their health, lifestyle and abilities.  

Carinya Society is a dynamic and growing, financially robust, disability service provider, which is committed to the quality and safety of the vulnerable people it services.  Carinya Society currently offers a range of services to NDIS participants that includes various forms of day time activities at a centre and in the community, specialist transport, and support for independent living in a community based home in the inner north of Melbourne. 

About the role

Carinya Society is finalising the growth plan for its disability service provision business over the next 3-5 years in Melbourne’s inner north and is now recruiting two Non-Executive Directors. Preference would be given to someone with governance as well as lived experience as a family member or carer of a person with a disability, and/or someone with facilities development knowledge, quality assurance and clinical governance experience, or ICT infrastructure development expertise.  

Opportunities are also available to join Board sub-Committees.

The Carinya Society is committed to recruiting to its Board of seven existing Directors, two Non-Executive Directors with experience in governance or a willingness to develop that expertise while they offer their deep insights to the Board with regard to either lived experience as a family member or carer of a person with a disability, or someone with facilities development knowledge, experience in quality assurance and clinical governance, or ICT infrastructure development expertise.  The Board usually meets ten times a year in the evening via Zoom for 90 minutes. Opportunities are also available to join Board sub-Committees.

Essential Criteria

To be successful in this position you will have an aspiration to contribute at a strategic level to improving the lives of people living with disability in the inner north of Melbourne. Our ideal candidate has expertise, knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Lived experience of disability and the NDIS
  • Facilities development and management
  • Quality Assurance Systems and Clinical Governance
  • ICT infrastructure development
  • Property development

You will be (or you have a demonstrated capacity to build) financial literacy, be a team player, a confident decision maker able to operate in a complex human services environment. You will be wise and experienced in the challenges of social justice and are likely to.be driven by the knowledge that you are making a difference to vulnerable people’s lives.
