About the organisation

Organisation Name : Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation

Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation has a long and proud history of supporting the community through changing times. The Foundation was established in 1923 by the Lord Mayor, Sir John Swanson, to provide support to hospitals to provide medical and rehabilitation services to returned service men and women facing financial disadvantage. The Foundation has continued to respond to the big issues of the day facing the community. In 2020 we are a contemporary and independent community foundation, supporting innovation and inspiring philanthropy in Melbourne to achieve positive social change.

We aim to increase life opportunities and promote social inclusion through a combination of grants, research, partnerships, communications and investment tools to grow and build strong communities. Our Impact Areas include Education & Employment, Environment & Sustainability, Healthy & Resilient Communities and Homelessness & Affordable Housing. We support innovation across these impact areas and help build the capacity of the not for profit and social enterprise sectors. We also grow philanthropy through Gifts in Wills, Charitable Fund Accounts, Giving Circles and social impact campaigns.

Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Strategic Plan (2019-2023) seeks to advance priorities within our Impact Areas through applying all the tools in the philanthropy toolbox: grants, collaboration, research, strategic communication, policy influencing, initiatives, and impact investment. In conjunction with our grants, we proactively participate in collaborations and networks, lead and codesign initiatives in critical impact areas. The progressive evolution of the work of the Foundation involves conducting targeted research to better understand the issues relevant to our success, facilitating policy change in a few key areas, and using strategic communications and impact investment consistent with our strategy.

Our current Key initiatives include the Affordable Housing Challenge II, Energy Efficiency & Climate Resilience in Vulnerable Households, Hot Spots, Resilient & Inclusive Melbourne, Community-led Resilience building, Clean Technology Powerhouse & Inclusive Climate Economy.
