The Organisation

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is both a place and a movement. As the largest independent not-for-profit human rights organisation in Australia, ASRC programs support and empower people seeking asylum and refugees to maximise their physical, mental and social wellbeing. As a movement, ASRC mobilise and unite communities to create lasting social and policy change.

ASRC is led by a skills-based board that is comprised of an Independent Chair and 5 independent directors. Due to significant & sustained recent success and growth the ARSC are seeking to further supplement and grow their Board capability. The directors bring governance and ensure that the ASRC remains a viable and effective organisation, securing its long-term future.
The ASRC’s vision is that “people seeking asylum can live safely, sustainably, independently and equally”

The Role

In addition to the key governance areas and responsibilities, community and member accountability and movement development, this voluntary position will provide guidance across the development of the ASRC’s organisational purpose, strategic direction and priorities.

Responsibilities also include ensuring effective and accountable performance in relation to operational management including financial accountability, legal compliance and industrial relations requirements.

The remit includes ensuring systems and processes are in place to enable consultation and information exchange between asylum seekers, staff and the board.

Skills Required

As an experienced senior executive and/or Board member from either the corporate or not-for-profit sector, you are able to harness your network of influential contacts to support the ASRC.

You feel confident with your ability to develop positive relationships that lead to meaningful decision-making and respectful interactions to support a growing organisation as it embarks on a new Strategic Plan.

We are actively recruiting for new Board members with a lived experience of being a refugee, a skills and experience gap we currently have on our Board. This is part of our stated commitment to diversity and representation in our new Strategic Plan.
