About the role

Are you looking for a new challenge in 2022? Come and join us at the Victorian Public Tenants Association (VPTA)! We are the peak body for people who live in public housing, and people who are waiting for access to housing assistance in Victoria. We undertake systemic advocacy and provide policy advice to the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, do community engagement and outreach work, as well as operate a free and confidential telephone advice service. Last financial year we assisted more than 500 residents and applicants with in depth advice and assistance.

We’re currently looking for two Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tenant Advocates to join our small and friendly team on a full time basis for 12 months, with the possibility of extension (depending on funding). These are newly created roles at the VPTA.

This new team will work closely with our Community Engagement Officer to build and maintain strong relationships with relevant stakeholders, organise and undertake impactful visits to communities around Victoria, and provide services and support to current and future social housing tenants. Work will occur from both our office on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, but will also involve taking short trips around Victoria to spend time in community.

The goal of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tenant Advocates is to provide culturally safe support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social housing renters and applicants that is independent from the landlord, and to ensure that their feedback is included in the VPTA’s broader advocacy and advice to Government.

If you are:

  • Committed to improving the lives of Aboriginal Victorians and have a demonstrated ability to deliver successful outcome for Aboriginal communities;
  • Someone who can work closely with a range of different Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations;
  • A team player who enjoys working collaboratively; and
  • Someone who has a passion for working with the Aboriginal community in Victoria to support successful outcome and influence change for people…

Then we would love to hear from you.
