The SZCC is a research center at Victoria University specializing in law and cultural diversity.  

The Centre shares the vision of its namesake, Sir Zelman Cowen, to 'enhance community understanding of the law and deepen the legal profession’s understanding of community issues

 

The Centre’s projects include: 

  • community engagement and development initiatives that promote multiculturalism, social cohesion and equality of opportunity.
  • training for the Australian and international legal sector
  • education programs for people seeking a better understanding of law, governance and regulation 

 

SZCC coordinates a number of projects and outreach initiatives for culturally and linguistically diverse and hard to reach communities. For the past five years, the Centre has delivered schools outreach programs to disadvantaged students in Victoria, to demystify the pathways between school, university, and employment.

The Centre also delivers training for diverse communities, including faith-based groups, to promote awareness of governance requirements for groups and individuals who take on leadership roles within their communities.  

 

About the role

We are seeking a Legal Projects Officer to provide executive support to the Director of the Centre, including the coordination of a diverse range of teaching, training and research projects associated with the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre.

 

MAJOR TASKS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide executive-level administrative and research assistance to the Director.
  • Lead operational activities for the Centre to support the Director including staffing requirements and reporting including monthly and annual budgeting.
  • Assist in the management of governance for the Centre, including compliance, reporting and committee secretarial support for the Centre’s advisory committees.  
  • Work with the Director and staff to prepare funding proposals, grant applications and tenders for the  University, government and philanthropic organisations including the preparation of project plans and budgets.  
  • Engage effectively and at a high level with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist as required in the coordination of a diverse range of events, training and research activities.
  •  Work collaboratively with other VU units to implement the Centre’s operational activities as well as marketing and communications strategies.
  •  Implement and apply relevant and applicable policies and procedures to ensure the provision of  effective and efficient administrative and organizational support services to the work area.
  • Apply time management skills to ensure that deadlines are met and complete tasks in a timely manner

 

PROFESSIONAL AND ORGANISATIONAL KNOWLEDGE

  •  Understanding of tender and funding requirements for government and philanthropic sectors.
  • Awareness of University research processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of policies, regulations and procedures of relevant University and government departments relating to their area of responsibility.
  • An understanding of role related University policies and procedures and how they interact with other related functions.  
  •  High-level MS Office skills including word processing skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel

 

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Knowledge or training equivalent to tertiary qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or extensive experience and management expertise, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education.
  • Experience in project management, including a well-demonstrated capacity to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results determined by critical dates in a busy/demanding environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to research, prepare and analyse reports and papers related to the position’s area of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as an effective team member in a diverse environment, as well as provide direction to less senior staff members
  • Ability to exercise a high level of initiative, judgment and decision-making and resolve complex issues with sensitivity and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated capacity to understand and comply with employer policy and practices in all aspects of work and conduct, including OH&S and Anti-Discrimination responsibilities and complete/attend relevant training.
  • Understanding of the University’s strategic directions, structure, and decision-making processes

Desirable  

  1. Degree in Law (or equivalent Bachelor’s degree) and broad knowledge or experience in fields relevant to the SZCC project areas.
  2. Familiarity with the University’s internal research processes and experience drafting grants, tenders and research proposals.
