About the team

The Public Guardian, a division of NSW Trustee & Guardian, promotes the rights and interests of people with disability through the practice of guardianship, advocacy and education. 

The Public Guardian can be appointed by a court or tribunal to make health and lifestyle decisions for people who are unable to live on their own, or with support. These include decisions such as where a person might live, their medical and dental treatment, health care, and other services.

It also provides information and support to private and enduring guardians, service providers and the wider community.

 

About the role

  • Ongoing & temporary vacancies. 35 hours per week.
  • Location:
    1 x ongoing role in Wollongong
    6 x temporary roles in Sydney Metro, Southern Regional & Northern Regional NSW.
    Flexible and remote working arrangements subject to negotiation
  • Clerk Grade: 7/8. Base salary $99,431 pa to $110,064 pa plus super and annual leave loading.

 

The Principal Guardian is responsible for making decisions on behalf of represented people with the aim of achieving the best possible outcomes.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing complex cases and making decisions consistent with the principles of the Guardianship Act 1987 (NSW), the Public Guardian’s standards, policy, and guidelines.

As a Principal Guardian, you will be involved in cases where complex and divergent opinions as to the person’s well-being may be present, such as dysfunctional family relationships partnered with conflict of interests or people with complex support needs.

The role is responsible for the supervision and mentoring of senior guardians & guardians and providing advice for more complex cases. You will be responsible for developing and implementing decisions for represented people, including preparing reports and recommendations to a variety of audiences.

As a Principal Guardian, you will be responsible for the assessment of guardianship matters and data to ensure caseloads are accurately allocated.

This role requires you to participate up to four times a year in an after-hours weekly roster. The roster includes working on a weekend: Friday 5.00pm-Monday 9.00 am as well as weekdays Monday-Friday 5.00 pm-9.00 am.

About you

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills with the ability to liaise & negotiate effectively with individuals at all levels. 
  • Excellent written skills to produce action plans and detailed reports.
  • A positive “can-do” attitude with the ability to manage complex caseloads.
  • A self-starter who can work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Strong leadership skills to mentor, coach and support Senior Guardians & Guardians
  • Good understanding of relevant legislation: Guardianship Act 1987 (NSW), the Mental Health Act 2007 (NSW), the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (Cth) and the Aged Care Act 1997 (Cth)

 

 

Essential requirements  

  • Degree or the equivalent experience in social, health, behavioral sciences or relevant experience.
  • Available to travel throughout NSW and to undertake after hours work on a rotational basis.
