The organisation

The Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) is a not-for-profit, membership-led organisation operating as the national peak body representing researchers, multidisciplinary professionals, service providers and policy makers from a broad range of professional backgrounds. AAG is also the Corporate Trustee for the AAG Research Trust (the research grant arm of the organisation), as well as being the executive office for the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics - Asia Oceania Region, and the International Longevity Centre – Australia.

The AAG’ s mission is to be an effective and independent thought leader on issues relating to ageing and longevity, drawing on and giving voice to the expertise of its members. The AAG aims to stimulate ageing and longevity research, assist in shaping the ageing agenda and support service providers and practitioners by connecting research to policy and practice.

First established in 1962, today the Association membership is approaching 1,300 and has divisions established in every State and Territory. The organisation has grown over the last five years and now has a staff of eight, supported by government grants, membership income and gifts to the Research Trust, and has a strategy for further growth.

AAG is looking to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to build on the strong reputation of the organisation and to lead and inspire its growth.  Working closely with a board of directors predominantly elected from states and territories, the CEO will be responsible for contributing to and delivering on the Board’s strategic  and operational business planning and performance, and the management of day-to-day operations, people and resources.  The CEO will ensure that AAG supports its diverse membership base via sector capacity building and development initiatives, leading policy and advocacy, the annual conference, and being a primary spokesperson for AAG.  
  
Experience, knowledge & skills

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience at senior executive level, with experience in a membership-based organisation or industry body an advantage
  • An understanding of governance – experience in working with a board, with a demonstrated ability to execute on strategy
  • The ability to communicate clearly and authentically – to deliver the organisation’s message and engage with a range of stakeholders both within and outside the organisation
  • A strong track record in stakeholder management including engaging with, and influencing policy decisions at Commonwealth and/or state/territory levels (experience translating research evidence into policy outcomes would be an advantage)
  • The ability to inspire and lead a small, but capable team
  • Experience in financial oversight and management to ensure short term financial health and long-term sustainability
  • Experience in – or understanding of –philanthropy/funding models within the for-purpose space, as well as the nuances of working with volunteer board, committees and member groups
  • Alignment to AAG’s vision, purpose, values, and code of conduct
  • Professional qualifications/tertiary degree in a relevant field

The AAG office is located in Melbourne, however we are flexible about the CEO’s location in Australia (must be able to travel to Melbourne as needed).  The role will involve some business-related travel in Australia and occasionally abroad.
