The Australian War Widows NSW Ltd (AWWNSW) was established in 1946. AWWNSW has always existed to empower women, to connect them to their community and provide avenues to reduce social isolation. AWWNSW is a well-respected entity within the veteran community sector.

AWWNSW is undergoing a significant transformation. In 2021 the objects of AWWNSW changed for the very first time. The purpose of AWWNSW is now to provide support for all members of the veteran community (including war widows, veterans of the Australian Defence Force, their spouses, parents, grandparents, children, and siblings). The changes made to the objects of AWWNSW are significant and commit the organisation to delivering a new voice, programs and services targeted at veterans’ families.

AWWNSW has a particular focus on supporting and advocating for women and families within the veteran community.

About the role

The Events and Communications Officer is responsible for coordinating online and in person events, supporting and communications campaigns, member and stakeholder communications, developing content for social media and newsletters, website and administration and event administration

The ideal candidate for the Events and Communications Officer has the following skills and attributes:

  • Good communication skills and high attention to detail.
  • Highly enthusiastic, proactive, and driven work ethic.
  • Able to manage competing priorities and timelines.
  • Personal accountability and work autonomously under broad direction.
  • Experience in a similar communication, member engagement or marketing role.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in visual and written content for social, digital and print media.
  • Good working knowledge of digital and social media platforms.
  • Experience in creating basic reports.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, CRM databases and marketing platforms.
  • Familiarity with publishing and design software platforms.
  • Experience in event coordination.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.

Desirable skills and attributes for both positions include:

  • Knowledge of/experience within the veteran/ defence sector.
  • Experience in delivery of events and commemorations within a military/ defence context.
  • Communications, marketing or like qualifications.
  • Familiarity with SEO optimisation.

Salary, term and benefits

  • Events and Communications Officer – Full time, initial 12-month contract (with option of extension), $65,000 pa plus super.

You will also be entitled to 4 weeks annual leave paid annual leave, personal and sick leave and TOIL time when working outside standard work hours. Flexible working arrangements may also be provided.
