Our research approach

Community First Development is a unique First Nations’ organisation with diverse knowledge and expertise. We are actively involved in First Nations’ communities; and established as a thought leader in First Nations’ community and economic development, research, monitoring and evaluation. We believe there are valuable connections between these streams of work.

Our research focuses on First Nations-driven, Participatory Action Research that results in meaningful and timely change for our people and communities. Our research activities are built into our community development activities and are conducted in-house, ensuring that learnings can be quickly acted on and used to strengthen our community development practice.

About the role

  • Canberra Location (other locations may be considered on application)
  • Part-time, 18 month contract, three days per week

At Community First Development, ‘research success’ is research that is requested, led and delivered by First Nations’ people and communities. It is undertaken through deep listening and strives to achieve the outcomes that communities have set out to achieve.

The Research and Evaluation Fellow is a pathway for First Nations’ academics to explore, design and deliver evaluation and research projects that are driven and led by First Nations’ people and communities.

Community First Development launched the Inaugural Fellowship in 2020. Murran/ Iwaidja woman, Donna Stephens, our first Fellow, took a lead role in a participatory action research project with 11 communities across Australia. The final report has been published and findings presented at numerous events.

We are now seeking a First Nations Research and Evaluation Fellow to come on board in July 2022.  This is an 18 month contract, three days a week to allow adequate time to design, implement and report on a participatory action research project with interested communities. The Fellow would also share findings through publications and presentations.

As an employee of Community First Development, the Fellow would be entitled to a salary and entitlements at Level 7.1 under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. As a charity, we also offer salary sacrificing arrangements.

  • Strong administration and project management experience including the ability to prioritise conflicting needs and execute multiple tasks efficiently and within tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated research and monitoring and evaluation skills. A university degree is required, as well as a commitment to future studies.
  • Demonstrated high level writing ability and attention to detail.
  • Experience working within a team and ability to build strong relationships with staff, management and stakeholders.
