About the organisation

Organisation Name : Aboriginal Community Housing Industry Association
ACHIA NSW is the peak representative body for Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHPs) in NSW. Through ‘top-down’ advocacy, we provide a vehicle to promote the allied interests of ACHPs and influence policy, strategy and outcomes regarding Aboriginal Housing throughout NSW. Propelling ACHP voices ‘from the ground up’, we provide a voice to government that is knowledgeable, experienced and directly connected to the Aboriginal communities in NSW and their housing services. We:

  • collaborate with the ACHP sector to collectively evolve its capabilities, strengths and opportunities in line with emergent needs identified with and by local communities;
  • advocate for culturally sound, evidence based policy, strategy and practice frameworks;
  • lobby for the delivery of more housing (across the housing continuum) and related goods and services through effective partnerships between ACHPs, government and private industry;
  • provide information and support to the ACHP sector through regular forums, conferences, seminars, workshops, guidance documents and alerts;
  • grow ACHP expertise through facilitated relationships with Subject Matter Experts that are apprised of sector context, latent opportunities for growth and barriers that need to be overcome by ACHPs through the application of expert intervention, advice and support;
  • probe sector and related stakeholder perspectives on recurrent and emerging gaps and challenges;
  • develop innovative program solutions that meet the needs of Aboriginal tenants and their families that factor in urban, regional and remote operating contexts;
  • deliver consistent, high-level support to ACHPs as they move through the NRSCH process and associated registration requirements; and
  • tell the story of Aboriginal housing - its history and value – using a broad based media strategy.

About the role

Aboriginal Community Housing Industry Association (ACHIA) NSW is the peak body representing Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHPs) in NSW. There are approximately 200 ACHPs in NSW including managing providers with a significant geographic footprint as well as Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) and Aboriginal Corporations (ACs) with smaller, more localised housing portfolios.

ACHIA NSW delivers its offerings using an Incubator-Accelerator service provision model.  Within the framework of the Incubator-Accelerator, you will be responsible for managing and delivering a variety of projects within the ACHP industry. The aim of these projects is to engineer sectoral capability uplift and workforce development. The ultimate goal is to ensure that through providing a range of culturally appropriate housing, the ACHP sector enhances the life opportunities and outcomes of Aboriginal people in NSW.

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education, skills, competencies and experience (the Selection Criteria):

  • Tertiary qualifications in social housing, community development or similar
  • 5 – 7 years’ experience at a Senior Operations level in a government department or peak body
  • Demonstrated up-to-date understanding of the social housing landscape in NSW
  • Above average understanding of logistical, ethical and human rights issues affecting Aboriginal people
  • Knowledge of cultural protocols and a track record of engagement with First Nations across NSW
  • Creativity
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Sound analytical skills and the ability to develop and lead a line of critical questioning
  • Above average written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of current government policy and innovation within the social and community housing field
  • Sound computing skills – especially the MS Office suite of programs, Zoom, CRMs, Apps and cloud-based software relevant to the social housing field
  • Experience tracking expenditure, initiating timely, effective financial responses
  • Unrestricted NSW Driver’s License

Projects will be varied and will require some travel within NSW.

The position can be located anywhere in NSW. You have the ability to work from home. A suitable office space at home is essential as is a reliable car and current NSW Drivers Licence. It should also be noted that employment in this role will require regular visits to meet with the ACHIA team at its office in Redfern.
