About the organisation

Organisation Name : Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens Limited

SHBG is a new and growing 15-hectare botanic garden located in Bowral, in the Southern Highlands of NSW, a garden mecca.  SHBG is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee that was formed in 2013 to establish and operate the gardens.  Development costs and operations are funded from income from functions and events, grants and donations.

SHBG is still in its formative years and its biggest challenge is gaining sufficient funding to deliver a developed garden consistent with the innovative design of the landscape architect.  Our vision is to be globally recognised as a leading public botanic garden.

The company’s constitution provides for between three and nine directors, who are appointed by the members for a three year term.  The current board has seven directors with a mix of qualifications and experience.  The board regularly reviews its requirements against the company’s strategic plan and risks and has identified the need for two additional independent directors with complementary skills and experience.

SHBG operates with a part-time CEO supported by an administration officer and book-keeper.  Apart from professional infrastructure projects, the work of developing and maintaining the gardens is carried out largely by volunteers, who meet weekly, under the direction of the CEO.

About the role

We are seeking expressions of interest from energetic and dynamic applicants with a good sense of humour to help meet our challenges and share the rewards.

As an independent director you will actively work with the Board to achieve the company’s vision, objectives and purpose.  The Board meets monthly, except for January, and convenes additional meetings for review of strategy as required.  Meetings are held in person during business hours, with online attendance available if required.

Until a fully operational management team is in place, directors are expected to take on some functions that would otherwise be undertaken by management.  Directors should be willing to participate in SHBG activities, including becoming a member of at least one committee.

This is a volunteer position. Local candidates preferred.

We are interested in receiving expressions of interest from people who have the following skills and experience:

  1. marketing, including building reputation and brand; developing programs; community engagement; developing partnerships.
  2. fundraising, including fundraising strategy and programs; grants; development opportunities; developing and managing philanthropic programs.

Director experience and education is highly desirable.  Experience in regional development could also be relevant.

For more information or for a preliminary discussion, please contact:  Christine Hawkins, Company Secretary, via email in the first instance: secretary@shbg.com.au.
