The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Aboriginal communities. The organisation has expanded steadily over past 40 years to provide a comprehensive range of medical, dental, and social services for our community.

As well as providing a variety of medical services, VAHS is committed to supporting the well-being of the community through contributions to community events and activities. VAHS is also committed to assisting research into the ongoing needs of the community.

About the role

 

The primary function of this position is to provide and coordinate high quality eye health services, along with contributing to the development of models of holistic health incorporating continuity of care. 

The Eye Health Aboriginal Health Worker works within a clinical team environment with the aim of improving the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the provision of comprehensive and culturally valid primary health care services.  

Key Selection Criteria

To be considered for this role you must have the following.

  • Understanding of and Commitment to the Aboriginal community.
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health Work or equivalent
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate, engage effectively and work together, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated ability to provide follow-up care services for clients and families.
  • Sound knowledge of health issues which influence the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a strong commitment to improving health and wellbeing outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi skilled team
  • Self-motivated with capacity to manage own workload with limited supervision
  • Understanding of patient confidentially within the context of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people health service
  • Demonstrated competence in use of Business Technology, internet, and desktop applications
  • Highly developed and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Fully approved Covid 19 Vaccinations (including booster)
This position is not available to persons not of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
