Djirra supports Aboriginal women's journey to safety and wellbeing and provides legal and practical support to Aboriginal people experiencing family violence. Djirra is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation with a rich history, established 20 years ago (as the Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service Victoria). It is also a place where culture is shared and celebrated

About the role

The Manager, Policy and Advocacy leads the development of innovative solutions, policy and research that ensures policy and advocacy responses, and projects are aligned with Djirra’s strategic priorities.

The role works closely with the Director, Strategy and provides high-level strategic advice to the Executive Leadership Team, and has a broad range of stakeholder engagement with government (including Local, State and Commonwealth), the Aboriginal community and various funding agencies.

Djirra is committed to Child Safety and as part of Djirra’s screening requirements all staff must have (or are able to obtain) a Working With Children’s Check and a National Police Check. In addition, if you lived in a country other than Australia for 12 months or more in the last ten years then the results of an international police check prior to commencement will be required. You must also demonstrate an understanding of children’s safety.

SOME OF YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE:

  • to prepare and deliver clear policy papers, presentations, reports and concise briefings.
  • to provide timely and high-quality advice on complex and sensitive policy issues and proposals and prepare and review reports and briefings as required for the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team.
  • to manage and lead a high calibre Policy and Advocacy team.
  • to manage multiple tasks, timelines and priorities in a complex and rapidly changing environment, under limited supervision.
  • to lead, coordinate and collaborate across Djirra and with a broad range of stakeholders on the development of sound policy and advocacy responses.
  • to represent Djirra on key stakeholder committees and groups and contribute to relevant committee and governance processes.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community, particularly in relation to the impact of family violence on Aboriginal women.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Aboriginal community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in designing, developing and delivering policy, advocacy and legislative reform.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of policy and advocacy responses that affect Aboriginal women and children.
