About the organisation

Organisation Name : South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network

At South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN), we care about health outcomes for people in the South East of Melbourne.

We are leaders, facilitators and influencers towards the shared goal of better primary health care.

SEMPHN is a Company Limited by Guarantee and as such has an independent Board of Directors, which reflects modern governance standards and expectations. SEMPHN is funded mainly by the Australian Government to help people in south east Melbourne get the health care they need, when and where they need it.

We do this by:

  • Commissioning community based health services.
  • Partnering to make quality care more accessible and integrated, and easier to navigate – especially for people who need it most.
  • Helping primary health care professionals to deliver the best care possible – now, and into the future.
  • Influencing Government policy on primary health care reform.

Evidence-based practice is the foundation of our work. We are constantly asking, ‘together, how can we do this even better?’ This could mean challenging the status quo and designing things differently. Ultimately, it’s about measurably improving health for people in south east Melbourne. So, are you with us?

About the role

Our Board is one which embraces alternative thinking, innovation, strategy, influence, and strong governance. We are seeking to enhance the diversity of our board to complement the skills and experience required for the effective oversight and governance of SEMPHN’s activities. Applications are now invited for up to four Non-Executive Board Director positions.

People who can demonstrate a strong commitment to primary care in the south eastern Melbourne catchment, either at a regional, state, or national level, with a strong governance background, are encouraged to apply for these positions.

SEMPHN is committed to diversity in our workforce and board members, where we can learn from life experiences and the perspectives of our people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, cultural background, disability, or sexual orientation.

Applicants with a broad skills, knowledge, and experience base with an interest in the following are encouraged to apply:

  • Financial management or commercial experience
  • Strategy creation or policy development
  • Best practice corporate and clinical governance structures
  • Policies and processes (particularly in the not-for-profit context)
  • Primary care
  • Mental health
  • Alcohol and other drug dependence and abuse
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • Population health
  • Health workforce
  • Digital health
  • Aged care

The current SEMPHN Board may comprise up to nine directors whose terms currently expire on a three-yearly basis (staggered in the first triennium). Retiring directors have the right to apply for reappointment. This provides for an annual cycle of Board renewal, with the Board’s Nominations Panel reviewing applications prior to the Annual Meeting in November each year.
