About the organisation
Charged with the maintenance of the National Standard for Organic and Bio-Dynamic Produce (National Standard), Australia’s mandatory standard for organic exports. This committee’s members are key industry stakeholders appointed under an agreement with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
The National Standard is a requirement for Australian producers, processors, wholesalers, and exporters for the exportation of organic goods, and provides the basis for equivalence negotiations with importing countries. This committee is responsible for making recommendations to the department on any amendments/additions to the National Standard and ensuring the Standard is up to date and fit for purpose.
About the role
This role of the Independent Chair of the NSAC has been established, as so many interests are involved, and members can sometimes be at cross purposes. This role is intended to preserve the Committee’s integrity, maintain an unassailable objectivity and transparency, provide a dispassionate conduit between stakeholders, and ensure the transparency and accountability of its rulings.
This role offers a fascinating and vital opportunity for a seasoned professional with considerable experience in managing technical committees. The duties of this role include (but are not limited to), managing a Secretariat, provision of strong leadership of the committee, supervising incoming and outgoing correspondence, and being the conduit between the committee and the DAFF.
Well-connected and very confident in your strength as a leader and manager, you have a calm, can-do, hands-on-as-needed approach. Along with which comes the wisdom of experience, a willingness to work closely with your committee and stakeholders, and the drive to progress strategic goals to achieve planned growth and change.
Meetings are quarterly and recently have been held virtually. An honorarium and approved expenses will be paid in accordance with Remuneration Tribunal standards and candidate experience., This will be paid in recognition of this complex role which demands a concentrated effort, periodic available time free of distractions, and a knowledge of agriculture and organic production.
Your experience managing a technical committee will have given you a clear appreciation of what you can expect from this role. Independence is of course another matter. In this case, it can be broadly defined as “someone who has been free from any business/relationship with the Organic and Biodynamic Industries over the past 5 years.”
This relates to memberships, investments, publications (including social media), public speaking and some other activities that can be defined in a simple phone call to Mike Conroy.
