About the organisation

Organisation Name : Australian Wildlife Conservancy

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is a global leader in conservation, providing hope for Australia’s wildlife with a science-informed, land management partnership approach which delivers high impact results. We protect endangered wildlife across 12.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

About the role

As the organisation enters an exciting new phase, we are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join our Legal team in the role of Legal Counsel. This position is offered as a permanent full-time role and will suit a talented professional who is keen to provide legal support to enable AWC’s mission to effectively conserve all native Australian wildlife and the habitats in which they live.

The core responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing AWC’s mining objections (Warden’s Court, negotiating access agreements);
  • Advising on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters, including contract reviews;
  • Providing advice and assistance on property law matters (leases, land tenure);
  • Providing guidance and assistance on HR, employment and health, safety and environment (HSE) related matters;
  • Providing advice on Native title and Aboriginal heritage matters;
  • Providing general legal advice across the broad scope of AWC’s activities.

To be successful, the role requires the following:

Essential:

  • Be an Australian lawyer with a current unrestricted practicing certificate, with about 8+ years post admission experience;
  • Logical reasoning and sound judgement, with the ability to understand, analyse and evaluate complex issues with the capacity to assess situations or circumstances and draw sound conclusions; and
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to identify and convey legal issues and risks.

Based in Perth, this is a rare opportunity to be actively involved in protecting Australia’s endangered wildlife by using your legal powers for good and helping shape the development of an organisation delivering measurable results where it really counts – in the field.  An attractive remuneration package is available for a candidate with suitable skills and experience.
