About the role
The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) is a collaborative research and training institute bringing together researchers from four NSW universities (MacU, UNSW, USyd, UTS) plus State and Commonwealth marine and environmental agencies. Our purpose is to ensure that marine and estuarine environments are valued, well-managed and protected, yielding health and wealth for Australians.
SIMS is based at Chowder Bay which enables marine scientists and students in Sydney and the broader marine science community to investigate links between near shore marine environments, urban harbours, fisheries, ocean processes and marine biodiversity.
SIMS is in the early stages of delivering a 10-year strategic plan that will lift the institute towards becoming a key research organisation in Australia during the UN Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). Over the coming years SIMS aims to deliver increased impact to its partner organisations and the broader community.
SIMS is seeking a General Manager (GM) with solid, hands-on experience to provide high-level project management, financial, administrative and strategic support to enable delivery of the Institute’s goals. Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Institute, the GM supports the work of the CEO, bringing the Institute’s overarching strategy to life, ensuring alignment of activity to strategy and building sustainability through effective strategic, financial and operational management.
If you have operational leadership experience, preferably in a not-for profit setting, and a desire to lead an organisation working in purpose-driven ways, this role is for you. Strong leadership, interpersonal and influencing skills to manage and develop internal and external stakeholder relations are critical to success in this role. The role will require a self-motivated leader with strong project management and problem-solving skills and excellent decision-making credentials honed in complex environments. Your understanding of risk management, relevant regulatory environment and sound business principles are essential.
To be successful, you will be degree qualified, a lateral thinker with well-developed analytical, problem-solving and research skills and an ability to develop innovative solutions. Importantly, you will have a genuine commitment to SIMS’s vision and strategy.
