About the role

The CCV Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court (DATC) pilot project sits alongside the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria’s (MCV) Drug Court Expansion projects. The CCV DATC pilot and the MCV expansion projects are governed, managed, and executed through an integrated and multi-jurisdictional approach to enable efficient use of resources. The Drug Courts in Victoria are underpinned by therapeutic jurisprudence principles and international best practice in this unique problem-solving court and program.

The division provides an alternative sentencing option to offenders with drug and/or alcohol dependency who have committed offence/s whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol and/or to support their dependency. The DATC employs a multidisciplinary team approach to working with participants on the program towards recovery.

The AOD Counsellor will provide high quality engagement, assessment, counselling to participants of Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court within the County Court, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The position has a focus on utilising diverse evidence informed therapeutic frameworks to address AOD dependence and links with offending behaviour. The position will join a team of two other AOD Counsellors and a Senior AOD Counsellor.

The purpose of this position is to reduce AOD related harms to individuals and their families by providing counselling utilising a variety of evidence informed treatment modalities, secondary consultation, collaboration, and specialist advice to Judicial Officers and the team in court. The position has a focus on addressing the underlying causes of offending, including trauma.
