About the Organisation

Vision - Every kid with cancer having the best chance of getting back to the things they love.

When kids get cancer, the last thing they want to do is exercise. Often their lives have been turned upside down and the things they love doing are suddenly out of reach. We know that movement helps cancer kids tolerate treatment better. It enhances their mental health and for the many who beat cancer it helps them return to their previous lives. But for parents, getting sick kids to move can seem impossible.

At Little Big Steps, we use technology (activity trackers) and practitioner-supported exercise medicine programs to get kids moving. Every small amount of movement counts and our programs give kids achievable goals and much needed support. The more we can keep kids moving, both in hospital and at home, the stronger they are at the end of treatment, and the easier it is for them to enjoy the activities they love.

The ongoing physiotherapy support that Little Big Steps provides is not part of normal care for kids with cancer. Sadly, resources in hospitals are limited, and kids need much more to optimise their return to normal life. Little Big Steps has the ambitious goal of providing physiotherapy support to every child with cancer in Australia.

About the role

Board Responsibilities:

The Little Big Steps Board is a working board with the expectation that each Director will make a significant and proactive contribution to the organisation. Collaboratively, the Little Big Steps Board is responsible for:

  • strategic direction of the organisation;
  • keeping appropriate Minutes and records of Board meetings and decisions;
  • oversight of the activities of key strategic initiatives, permanent and special-purpose committees; and
  • delegation of powers to and setting remuneration of the executive office.

As a working board with a small executive, the expectation of the Board and each Director is to substantially commit to key activity streams such as, but not limited to:

  • brand development and awareness;
  • fundraising including sharing personal connections;
  • donor and other key stakeholder management;
  • contractual governance; and
  • program development and oversight.

Treasurer Role and Responsibilities:

The financial oversight of Little Big Steps has been expertly led by our founding treasurer for the last 3 years. Upon his retirement, Little Big Steps is looking for a replacement to support us through our continued growth.

Beyond the wider expectations of acting as a Board Director, the role of the Treasurer is to support the executive and Board in maintaining the highest standards of financial planning, decision making and reporting.

Reporting to the Board Chair, the Treasurer will maintain a close working relationship with the CEO.

Key duties include, but will not be limited to:

  • Collaborate on forecasts, budgets and plans in consultation with the executive and other required stakeholders;
  • Make sure financial reports are available and understood at required meetings;
  • Produce a Treasurer’s report at regular meetings and when required;
  • Actively support the completion of the annual audit with the appointed auditor;
  • Produce an annual financial report for the AGM;
  • Maintain the integrity, security and sustainability of the financial management system;
  • Support compliance with relevant laws and legislation e.g. BAS, Superannuation, PAYG;
  • Establish and/or abide by sound financial management policies, procedures and reporting processes;
  • Remain fully informed of the financial performance and position of Little Big Steps at all times;
  • Advise the Board on financial strategy, planning and management;
  • Present financial recommendations to support strategic and operational decision making as required;
  • Other duties or responsibilities as outlined in the constitution or required by the Board;

Knowledge, Experience and Attributes

As a working board, we are looking for a passionate individual, excited by the opportunity to actively participate in critical duties as Treasurer, as well as more broadly with various organisational activities and initiatives.

As such, the ideal candidate has:

  • Excellent communication skills;
  • A solutions-focused mindset; and
  • Exceptional attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • A valid working with children check, or willingness to promptly obtain;
  • Financial expertise and financial managerial experience;
  • Experience in digital financial management software;
  • The ability to communicate actionable financial insights to a variety of audiences;
  • Experience in delegating and effectively managing relevant authorities;
  • Excellent knowledge and recent experience in organisational governance; and
  • Australian Institute of Company Directors credentials would be highly regarded.

Legal Duties:

As a charity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth), Directors must comply with these governance standards (instead of the normal Corporations Act duties):

  • to exercise powers and discharge duties with the degree of care and diligence that a reasonable individual would exercise if they were a director of the registered entity;
  • to act in good faith in the charity’s best interests, and to further the purposes of the charity;
  • not to misuse the position;
  • not to misuse information obtained in the performance of their duties as a director of the charity;
  • to disclose any perceived or actual material conflicts of interest;
  • to ensure that the charity’s financial affairs are managed in a responsible manner;
  • not to allow the charity to operate while insolvent.

Meetings:

Currently, the Board meets on a quarterly basis.  Special meetings may be held from time to time, and the quorum for any meeting is three Directors.  All Directors are expected to have read all pre-reading materials.

Time Commitment:

Approximately 10 hours per month.
