About the role

The Sydney office is part of Human Rights Watch’s network of affiliated offices and charities
throughout the world. Its core activities are advocacy and media relations. The Associate will
support the Director to carry out these activities, especially in relation to fundraising and outreach.

The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely but will be expected to work from the
Sydney office at least 2-3 days a week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both
the recruitment and onboarding of this position.

 

Responsibilities:

1. Monitor and track policy developments, official statements and visits, and legislative plans;
track key Australian policy debates including legislative analysis;
2. Schedule meetings, manage travel arrangements and take minutes at meetings;
3. Maintain and update advocacy lists;
4. Assist with the organization and coordination of logistics for special program events in
Australia;
5. Provide administrative support to the Australia Director;
6. Help to cultivate strong relationships with Australia-based journalists and media outlets,
including updating relevant contacts in the HRW media database;
7. Draft, edit, code, and distribute communications and documents, including news releases,
reports, web content for the HRW Australia website, and other social media as relevant;
8. Monitor and analyze media coverage of HRW in Australia;
9. Assist with research as required;
10. Recruit, coordinate, and mentor Interns;
11. Perform other tasks, as may be required.

 

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in international relations, law, journalism,
social sciences or studies relating to the country relevant to the function is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience working in an office environment or assisting in
field research is required.

 

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and
ability to work under pressure are required.
2. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with
external partners are required.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; oral and written
communication skills in other languages is highly desirable.
4. Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically,
excellent writing and editing skills, and a dynamic public speaking ability are required.
5. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
6. Experience working for an international human rights organization in a support function is
highly desirable.
Other: Candidates must possess valid work authorization for Australia; HRW is unable to sponsor work
permits for this role.
