About the role
The Media Manager is the key focal point for all CARE Australia media activities and related advocacy content. They are responsible for building relationships with the media to advance opportunities aligned with CARE’s strategic objectives and for preparing relevant spokespeople. This role requires a blend of rapid response, especially in the event of responding to a humanitarian emergency, and proactive planning with staged implementation, especially in support of content generation, fundraising and brand activities.

Key responsibilities
- Develop, implement and evaluate CARE’s media strategy and associated content that deliver on CARE’s strategic objectives and as directed by CARE’s Senior Public Affairs Manager
- Assist the Senior Manager of Public Affairs in frontline media management for CARE, including writing and pitching media alerts, press releases, letters, talking points, Questions & Answers and briefing documents.
- Proactively identify press opportunities via all media channels
- Ensure that key messages align with strategic priorities and approved PA positions
- Coordinate CARE’s proactive media activities as directed
- Undertake all administrative activities as directed with regard to CARE’s media activities
- Coordinate CARE’s media response to emerging crisis situations, as directed, identifying media risk in order to have proactive plans in place. Rapidly prepare and issue tailored media materials for humanitarian emergencies in conjunction with overseas Country Office and CARE International staff as necessary, and
- Proactively identify opportunities to platform CA leadership where relevant to strategic priorities, leveraging media statements, public commentary and speaking engagements for maximum benefit.
- Coordinate media and associated content generation activities with CARE International and Country Office colleagues as directed
- Work closely with the Product Development and Marketing teams and as directed by the Director of Fundraising & Marketing to implement media support for major fundraising campaigns to ensure media and social media activity is aligned and mutually reinforcing
- Work closely with Brand & Marketing to deploy communications strategies for emergency appeals, and collaborate on brand promotions through proactive content generation
- Support for CI “Follow the sun” media protocols
- As directed by Senior Manager of Public Affairs support research and analysis activities.
- Work with PD&M to identify and strategise opportunities for topical marketing and audience activation activities based on the news cycle and trends in the public sphere
- Keep up to date with all media trends and issues of relevance to the aid sector in Australia
Ideally you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications/Media or equivalent work experience
- Three years’ experience as Media Coordinator/Manager or similar
- Experience in multi-channelled media campaigns. Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to write for a broad range of audiences and channels within tight timelines.
- Ability to develop appropriate cross-platform (broadcast, print, social media, podcast) content aligned with agreed positioning
- Ability to coach and prepare spokespeople for media interviews and provide constructive feedback on their performance.
- Demonstrated experience in fostering good relationships with members of the media
- Critical thinker with strong conceptual & research skills
- Experience monitoring and identifying opportunities and risks within the media context, and the ability to demonstrate good media judgment, and act promptly in matters involving sensitive and complex issues.
