About the organisation

Organisation Name : Royal Flying Doctor Service

Proudly serving Australians since 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) provides emergency aeromedical and allied health services for people in rural and remote Australia. We strive towards improving the health and wellbeing of our rural communities and believe in creating opportunities, so all Victorians have the choice to access essential primary health care services.

About the role

Our Royal Flying Doctor Dental team is excited to be growing its presence in regional and rural communities across the state. We are currently seeking a part time (0.5FTE) or Casual Dentist to join our experienced team of Dentists, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Assistants and Program Managers. The role requires travelling to rural locations throughout Victoria to provide essential dental services to small communities that do not have easy access to public dental services.

A large proportion of people living in remote and rural Australia do not have access to a regular dental service. Recognising the important link between oral health and overall health, the RFDS has established oral health services in parts of remote and rural Australia. These services are provided using mobile and outreach delivery models.

This role is so much more than a regular Dentist role! You will be travelling to scenic parts of Victoria you may have never seen before and delivering a service that is often not accessible to these remote communities if it weren’t for the RFDS dental programs. Not only is this role rewarding, but you would also be working for a service that wants to invest time in you, providing both internal and external training days, to ensure you have the best opportunities of growing within your career.

Working as a Dentist with the Royal Flying Doctor Service will mean that no two days are the same. This position will give you the opportunity to work not only in all types of locations but also across three different clinical settings. The RFDS dental team operates from a fixed clinic, as a part of the Smile Squad program and out of our amazing dental trucks – a dental clinic on wheels!

The Dentist is responsible for providing accurate diagnosis and treatment planning within the scope of practice for the Flying Doctor Dental Clinic. In this role, you will alternate between spending one week on the road (Monday to Friday) and having the next week off.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking accurate diagnosis and treatment planning within the scope of practice for the program
  • Providing appropriate referral of patients to specialist services or private services for non-eligible patients
  • Responding appropriately to client needs, enquiries and complaints
  • Identifying and managing high risk patients effectively
  • Maintaining communication with all staff members for the coordination of activities as necessary
  • Maintaining effective practices for the sterilisation and disinfection of instruments and equipment to prevent cross infection in accordance with DBA Infection Control Guidelines
  • Ensuring the standard of patient care is maintained at the highest possible level commensurate with DHSV policy and the RFDS specific resources
  • Maintaining and processing dental records in accordance with DHSV record standards, the DBA Dental Records Guidelines and the Health Records Act
  • Maintaining casework and health promotion records within Titanium as required
  • Providing health education and promoting oral hygiene and preventive care to patients
  • Undertaking duties in a professional manner when dealing with patients and the general public
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to build a collegiate workplace culture
  • Actively promoting a positive public image of RFDS Victoria and the program
  • Participating in quality and occupational health and safety initiatives and activities as directed
  • Taking responsibility for identifying potential hazards and reporting incidents in the workplace to RFDS Victoria
  • Reflecting health and safety behaviors conducive to an occupationally responsible workplace

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (i.e. Bachelor of Dental Science)
  • Current registration with AHPRA with no current conditions or undertakings
  • A minimum of 3 years previous clinical experience as a Dentist within Australia
  • Holds a Victorian Radiation Licence or willingness to obtain
  • Advanced level of clinical competence, including the ability to work independently
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Sound awareness and understanding of infection control principles
  • Strong computer skills (Titanium – desirable, Microsoft Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to provide innovative leadership and have a ‘solutions focused’ approach
  • Knowledge of public dental programs
  • Previous experience with the provision of mobile dental services (highly desirable)
  • Professional indemnity insurance cover
  • Current Victorian Driver’s License which is subject to a driving history check
  • Current Employee Working with Children’s Check and Police Check
  • Evidence of COVID19 vaccinations and booster
  • Current CPR and defibrillation certificate
  • Willingness to travel to locations throughout Victoria as required

If you are passionate about all things Dental and share our vision of bringing health care to rural and remote Australians, what are you waiting for? We would love to hear from you! Please submit your resume and cover letter today!

RFDS policy requires evidence of three covid vaccinations along with an annual influenza vaccination unless a medical exemption can be provided. Further vaccinations may be required for clinical staff.

Applications will be assessed as received and only applicants shortlisted for an interview will be contacted directly.

RFDS offers a competitive salary with options to maximise your take home pay with generous not-for-profit salary packaging of up to $15,900 free income per tax year and up to an additional $2,650 additional tax-free money to spend towards meals and entertainment (not available to casual employees).

RFDS is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
