The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) is the leading standards body responsible for the training and education of specialists and GP obstetricians in obstetrics and gynaecology in Australia and New Zealand. 

RANZCOG is committed to the establishment and maintenance of the highest possible standards of practice in women's health and provides programs in training, accreditation and continuing professional development (CPD) that are responsive to the evolving health care needs of women. 

RANZCOG supports research into women's health and act as an advocate for women's healthcare by forging productive relationships with individuals, the community and professional organisations, both locally and internationally.

About the role

An Independent GFARM member with legal or governance experience provides specialised legal and governance expertise to the Governance, Finance, Audit, and Risk Management Committee (GFARM). This involves offering insightful counsel on legal matters, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, contributing to the development of robust governance frameworks, and actively participating in financial oversight and risk management.

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Provide legal and governance opinion regarding compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Review and offer independent view on legal implications of committee activities and decisions.
  • Contribute to the review of governance policies, terms, and practices.
  • Provide external independent perspective on the best governance principles within the organisation.
  • Participate in the review and analysis of financial reports and statements.
  • Provide insights and recommendations on financial strategies and risk management.
  • Act in accordance with the Code of Conduct.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong background in legal and governance matters, ideally with relevant qualifications and extensive experience in these areas.
  • Knowledge and experience in risk management.
  • An understanding of financial principles and reporting.
  • A high level of independence and objectivity, as they will be responsible for impartially assessing and advising on governance matters.
  • A strong grasp of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to the organization’s operations is vital.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating governance reports, identifying areas of concern, and proposing appropriate solutions.
  • High ethical standards and integrity, given the sensitivity of the issues dealt with in governance and legal matters.
  • The ability to think strategically and provide guidance in aligning governance strategies with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • The ability to manage and resolve conflicts effectively as governance matters may involve differences of opinion.
  • Strong decision-making skills as the candidate will be expected to make informed and objective recommendations on governance matters.
  • An interest in and commitment to issues concerning women’s health.
