WEstjustice are a leading community legal centre providing free services to vulnerable and disadvantaged people. From our offices in Footscray, Werribee and Sunshine and through our outreach services we provide advice on a broad range of issues including employment, discrimination, consumer disputes, tenancy, credit and debt, family disputes, family violence, criminal law and more.
WEstjustice believe in a just and fair society where the law and its processes do not discriminate against vulnerable people. We provide free legal education, undertake law reform activities and work in partnership with their local communities to deliver projects that improve access to justice.
WEstjustice’s purpose is to service the legal needs in the West in a way that addresses the systemic nature of disadvantage.
About the role
The Board of the Western Community Legal Centre Limited trading as WEstjustice is seeking to recruit a suitably motivated and self-driven person with experience in NFP / for purpose fundraising (both State/Federal Government and private philanthropy) and ideally qualified or experienced in the responsibilities of directorship of a not-for-profit organisation.
WEstjustice is currently seeking to appoint one new director pending the imminent retirement of an existing director.
The purpose of the Community Legal Centre is to address systemic injustice by providing free legal and other services on an individual level and more broadly through community education, law reform and advocacy. The Centre employs approximately 80 staff plus a substantial number of volunteers.
The Board meets 6 times per year (approximately every 2 months) on a Thursday evening via Microsoft Teams (or alternative video conferencing platform) or, where possible, in person, usually at the WEstjustice Footscray offices. The Director will be required to attend 80% of meetings and also to become involved in a Board Sub-committee which would generally meet every 2 months during business hours via Microsoft Teams (or alternative video conferencing platform). There may also be some ad hoc board or strategic planning sessions scheduled throughout the year.
The term is for 3 years (with options to be re-nominated for two further terms of 3 years each) and is a voluntary position which does not attract any remuneration.
Candidates must have some form of qualification from a reputable institution in corporate governance or experience in corporate governance and must be able to demonstrate commitment to the objects and purpose of the Company.
