About the organisation
About the role
- Ensure the WA fishing industry is profitable and sustainable
- Suit candidates from industry, associations, politics, membership or advocacy
- Work closely with the board, the membership and government bodies
The Organisation
The Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) is the peak body representing the professional fishing industry. WAFIC works to secure a responsible and viable industry that is confident of resource sustainability and security of access to a fair share of that resource, together with cost-effective fisheries’ management, the operation of businesses in a safe, environmentally responsible and profitable way, and the appreciation and promotion of investment in industry research and development.
WAFIC provides strategic leadership and advocacy on significant matters affecting the industry as a whole. It works in partnership with sector bodies and other key stakeholders to resolve significant industry matters and bases decision-making and advice on sound science and industry consultation.
The Role
Working closely with the board and members, the newly appointed CEO will ensure WAFIC accomplishes its mission and vision, achieving strategic, financial and operational plans, meeting performance targets, and providing accountability in representing the members and the long-term interests of the commercial fishing industry. You will liaise with the Minister, Government agencies and associated decision makers and influencers to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage positive outcomes for industry.
In overseeing external public relations you will bring fresh ideas to an industry wide engagement strategy encompassing brand positioning, newsletters and building awareness and impact with the media. Your expertise in governance, policy and business practice will bring renewed integrity to board and organisational processes.
Skills Required
Ideally you will have senior leadership experience developed via the representation of industry membership, political, government sector or campaign and advocacy driven organisations. You have a deep understanding of local, national and global natural resource trends and you understand the importance of and bring the knowhow to build a strong member driven peak body.
Qualified in an appropriate discipline, you will have the capacity to understand industry funding models and can develop income diversification strategies. You’re well known for managing complex government and industry relationships at both the policy and resourcing levels, as well as identifying commercial opportunities and engaging with the market to stimulate participation and collaboration.
Working with a board is second nature to you, as is your experience in governance, human resources, financial management and leading a team, including organisational development and ongoing review.
A background in the fishing industry or industry associations will be highly regarded. This role is due to commence in September this year.
If ensuring the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the WA fishing industry is a career motivator, please submit your resume and cover letter responding to the skills required above or speak with Richard Green or Debbie Jardine from NGO Recruitment in Sydney on (02) 8243 0570 for further information.
