About the Stephen Charles Fellowship:

The Centre for Public Integrity is Australia’s leading anti-corruption research institute. We are honoured to announce the Stephen Charles Fellowship, created to celebrate the exceptional contribution to public life of the Honourable Stephen Charles AO KC. As a founding Board member of the Centre, Stephen Charles has been one of Australia’s most powerful advocates for integrity in public administration. His pivotal role in establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission has left an indelible mark on Australia’s governance landscape.

After a distinguished career at the Victorian Bar and as a founding judge on Victoria’s Court of Appeal, the Hon Stephen Charles AO KC retired. As a founding board director at the Centre, he co-authored the book Keeping Them Honest in 2021, which ignited nationwide debate about the need for a National Anti-Corruption Commission. This Fellowship continues his legacy.

Fellowship Overview:
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Salary: $40,000 per year plus super (part-time)
  • Focus: High-quality, high-impact research directed towards informing the design and resourcing of integrity commissions
Key competencies:
  • Law degree
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (completed or in progress)
  • Expertise in integrity commissions, anti-corruption work, or related fields
  • Exceptional legal research skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
