The Organisation
Birdlife Australia is a leading conservation organisation dedicated to protecting and preserving Australia’s native birds and their habitats. They combine scientific research, on-the-ground conservation efforts, and community engagement to address threats to bird populations and promote biodiversity. Taking a holistic approach, they blend citizen science initiatives with professional expertise to create impactful, data-driven conservation strategies tailored to Australia’s diverse avian species and ecosystems.

It is also Australia’s most popular conservation organisation, with around 375,000 supporters, donors, volunteers, campaigners and members, and a network of more than 40 voluntary community groups. They are in the first few years of delivering the ambitious 2032 strategy – immediate and urgent action is required.

The Role
The Executive Director Participation and Engagement is accountable for Birdlife Australia’s community participation, engagement and fundraising strategy and execution.

Leading a sizable team of specialists, you will work closely with the CEO and leadership team in continuing to refine the value proposition to members and supporters, large and small. This will include links to performance and fundraising metrics, contributing to the future sustainability of the organisation.
  
The Person
A values-driven professional, your success in the For Purpose sector is based on demonstrated commercial acumen, good governance and personable leadership.  You have likely worked across a variety of roles and lead teams who are focused on Fundraising, Participation and Engagement.
  
You have demonstrated experience in build and execution of strategy in each of these areas, and to work towards ambitious targets. And key to this is continuing to provide opportunities build the capability of those under your leadership. Highly regarded will be working across volunteer groups and/or membership bases.
  
With proven team development expertise in multi-service delivery, you are skilled in ongoing assessment of the delivery of excellent outcomes for the community. Your broad skills will ideally have been honed in a similar community setting, empowering and resourcing your functional leaders to achieve a high-performance culture.
  
You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven leadership experience at a senior executive level, with preference for leading sizable fundraising or engagement teams
  • String understanding and demonstrated experience in developing and implementing community engagement strategies
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector, preferably within conservation or environmental organisations.
  • Knowledge of Australian biodiversity and conservation issues.
  • A degree in Communications, Marketing, Community Development, or a related field
