About the organisation
Established in 1981, AGOSCI exists to provide a community and a platform for people who may not rely on speech alone to understand or be understood by others, their families and supporters, and the professionals who work with them.
Our vision is that all communicators can participate fully in all aspects of life because their individual differences in communication assistance needs, modes and styles, are acknowledged and supported throughout communities and in all spaces.
AGOSCI’s membership and broader community includes family and community members; teachers and educators; speech pathologists and other health professionals; students and academics; assistive technology suppliers; support workers and disability service organisations.
Recognised as the National Peak Body within Australia and having over 750 members, AGOSCI has earnt the reputation as being the “go to resource” on AAC (augmentative and alternative communication – when a person uses an alternative to speech to communicate). AGOSCI facilitates over 29 Educational Courses annually. These courses are delivered both online and face to face, with both internationally acclaimed and home-grown specialists in their areas of expertise, providing the most up to date education for our stakeholders. In addition to this we also manage a National Conference and National Tour on alternating years. This is our secret sauce, creating a sense of community, a chance to celebrate everyone and creates the VIBE that we are known for. We love bringing people together to celebrate our diversities and catch up with old friends and make new ones.
AGOSCI also provides Grants to support continuing research into the sector and we are currently partnering with Two Way Street undertaking research to support Mentoring.
AGOSCI is a NFP Charity and holds DGR status and proudly returns all profits back into the growth of the AAC Sector. Our continued success has been off the back of our small and dedicated family of Volunteers spread across Australia and operationally we engage the services of 2 employees.
