About Us Anti-Slavery Australia is the only specialist legal practice, research and policy centre committed to the abolition in modern slavery in Australia. We provide free, confidential legal and migration services to people who have experienced or are at risk of modern slavery in Australia. Anti-Slavery Australia provides access to legal advice through the engagement of JM Burn Solicitor. Our work fills a critical gap in helping survivors access justice, connect with support, and build positive futures for themselves and their families. Anti-Slavery Australia is located in the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology Sydney, which has a reputation for teaching and learning innovation, world-class research and external engagement with the legal profession and wider community. The faculty has a strong teaching focus, a dynamic research culture and a commitment to social justice and inclusion.   About the Role   Anti-Slavery Australia is recruiting for a Lawyer and Human Rights Legal Practice Manager to join their team in a full-time capacity for a 2.5-year contract. The Lawyer/Manager is accountable for providing casework and advice, including complex casework, to survivors of modern slavery within a migration, human rights and legal framework. The role supports the running of the legal practice by developing and implementing operational policies and procedures, as well as contributing to law reform initiatives and other activities of the centre. The position holder trains and supervises students, interns and volunteers, and manages key relationships with external stakeholders to deliver key human rights outcomes. As the ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • The ability to relate productively and sensitively to vulnerable and traumatised people, from a range of cultural backgrounds, in the provision of legal services.
  • A high degree of adaptability and the ability to effectively problem solve when confronted with complex legal matters.
  • Outstanding file management skills, including the ability to manage a large volume of client data and documentation in line with legal requirements, and ensuring the regular update and maintenance of the client database.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge, across a range of relevant legal areas such as human rights, international and domestic law, forced marriage, human trafficking, slavery, migration, family law and protection orders.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake and deliver comprehensive and accurate legal research, often within tight timeframes.
  • Experience in supervision and development of staff and/or volunteers or interns.

Remuneration & Benefits Base Salary:  $115,265 (HEW 8) This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary. This position is full-time, and the appointment will be made on a fixed term basis until June 2027. This role requires a Working with Children Check (WWCC).
