The Organisation
Based in Carlton, Common Equity Housing Ltd (CEHL) is Australia’s largest cooperative housing provider, managing over 2000 properties through 90+ housing cooperatives across Victoria. Cooperative housing offers an alternative to private rental and home ownership, providing secure, long-term tenancies at affordable rents within supportive communities.

Led by an inspiring and highly regarded Managing Director and Executive Team, the organisation is looking for a senior finance leader/CFO who will also take responsibility for the property investment strategy and asset management of a $1B portfolio. 

The Position
Reporting to the MD, and as a key member of the ELT, the Chief Financial & Investment Officer provides strategic leadership to ensure the organisation’s long-term financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation through:
  • financial governance & strategy, 
  • financial reporting & budget oversight,
  • corporate finance, 
  • investment strategy,
  • asset management, and
  • team leadership

The role oversees financial governance frameworks, as well as investment portfolio management and asset strategy development, while driving effective financial planning, capital investment decisions, and governance frameworks that align with the organisation’s mission and strategic objectives.

The Person
To be successful in this role, you must be CA or CPA qualified and have:
  • Extensive (minimum 10 years) experience in financial leadership, corporate finance, and investment risk assessment experience within a relevant sector (e.g., housing, infrastructure, financial services, or government-funded programs). 
  • Strong understanding of capital markets, investment risk management, and financial governance frameworks.
  • Experience in financial oversight of property investments, capital projects, and asset lifecycle management.
  • Investment modelling, scenario planning, and capital funding experience.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance, financial reporting, and meeting statutory obligations.
  • Experience in applying for and managing varied and complex funding sources, including government grants, co-contribution funding schemes, and other financing models for housing affordability initiatives.
