About the role

Media and Communications Manager 

At Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL), we are seeking a passionate Media and Communications Manager to join our dedicated team. 

Location: Fitzroy, Victoria 

Job Type: Permanent Full-Time working 38 hours per week

Salary: $109,846.69 to $114,695.78 per annum, based on skills and experience plus 11.5% superannuation.

About the role 

The Communications and Media Manager is responsible for strategically increasing coverage and public support for BSL’s work by communicating our services, issues we care about and policy solutions for ‘an Australia free of poverty’.

  • Promote the organisation using non-paid media (social, local, mainstream) to increase community reach and brand awareness.

  • Develop and implement communications strategies in collaboration with internal teams, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.

  • Create, manage, and publish content for various audiences, including media releases, speeches, newsletters, and digital materials.

  • Build and maintain media relationships, provide media training, and identify compelling stories from staff and service users.

  • Ensure communications align with accessibility standards, Reconciliation commitments, brand guidelines, and internal policies while tracking performance and managing budgets.

What we are looking for

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual who has a passion for supporting the mission of BSL and delivering excellence in your role.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone who has the following key skills and experiences:

  • Tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations or related field and/or demonstrated expertise and experience in Communications and/or Journalism.
  • Strong media relationships and 4+ years’ experience pitching and securing media coverage.

  • Proven success in media and social media engagement, including public relations campaigns.

  • Excellent writing skills for diverse audiences, with strong attention to detail and proofreading ability.

  • Skilled in planning, project management, and translating complex ideas into accessible content.

  • Proficient in social media strategy and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
