About the organisation
The National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) is a not-for-profit organisation and is the lead authority for asthma knowledge, working to improve the health of people living with asthma and the social and economic impacts of asthma. The NAC: writes the national guidelines for asthma (the Australian Asthma Handbook): educates and supports health professionals; promotes best-practice care to people with asthma and their families; and advocates for the whole asthma community. Through Sensitive Choice it provides the community with essential information about asthma and allergy management to allow consumers to identify asthma and allergy-aware products and services.
The NAC is a collaboration of four member bodies: the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Each member body nominates a Director to the NAC Board. Representatives of these organisations comprise the NAC Board alongside independent Directors.
About the role
Expressions of interest are sought from individuals who have:
- Experience as a Chair of a Board of Directors.
- Business acumen and expertise preferably in small to medium enterprises or not-for-profit organisations.
- Governance knowledge and experience in best-practice corporate governance structures, policies and processes, particularly in the not-for-profit health or health related organisation would be useful.
- Leadership skills and experience and a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships of mutual respect with Board members and to work constructively with a CEO, staff and volunteer members of Board sub-committees and organisational advisory groups.
- Strategic expertise with the ability to develop and review strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision-making of the Board.
- An understanding of a Chair and director’s responsibilities (including risk and compliance oversight) -understanding not only the role’s individual legal duties and responsibilities but also the ethical, fiduciary and financial responsibilities of the Board.
