About the role

Operating within the Greater Brisbane region, Put Them First is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the physical and emotional well-being and safety of infants in the alternative (or foster) care environment. Our focus is infants from newborn to 2 years old, the most vulnerable time in a child’s life. We want them to become the best version of themselves, reach their full potential in every aspect of their lives, and enjoy the best start to life, regardless of their primary care circumstances.

With big plans in place this year for programs to support and upskill the people closest to these infants, our small, cohesive team at Put Them First is ready to welcome new volunteers wanting to contribute in the areas of program or project management, administration, grants, human resources, legal, marketing, communications, fund raising, policy writing, or website and/or social media content management.

And if none of these areas appeals, simply bring your energy, enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in and help and we will support you to develop a meaningful role within our team.

About the organisation

Organisation name : PUT THEM FIRST

Founded in 2017 by two experienced and passionate foster carers, Put Them First (PTF) is a small, start-up community organisation dedicated to improving the physical and emotional well-being and safety of infants who are in the alternative (or foster) care environment. Our focus is infants from newborn to 2 years old, the most vulnerable time in a child’s life.

At PTF we genuinely believe that all infants deserve to grow up happy, healthy and safe, enjoying the same opportunities as those available to children whose protection does not require intervention by “Child Safety.”

Our mission is to support infants in alternative (foster) care to become the best version of themselves,
reach their full potential in every aspect of their life, and enjoy the best start to life, regardless of their primary care circumstances.

To achieve this, we are pursuing the following goals:

Legislation
Develop age-specific legislation to expand and improve child safety regulation to reflect the needs of infants and toddlers in alternative (foster) care.
Foster Carers
Build scaffolding around foster carers to provide emotional support throughout each alternative care child placement stage.
Biological Parents
Develop a Parent Mentor Program to support biological parents working towards permanent and positive reunification with their infants in alternative (foster) care.
Child Safety
Facilitate in-depth discussions with social workers and other Child Safety team members promoting an understanding of early childhood development during the first one thousand days of life, and its relevance to alternative (foster) care.
Think Tank
Provide expert knowledge and advice, research to the alternative (foster) care sector on best practice in the care and development of vulnerable 0-2 year olds in alternative (foster) care, informed by a think tank of alternative care providers, educators and professional practitioners.
