About the role

Our Treasurer, Chairperson and Secretary are the Directors of Open Door Youth Housing Support Service Limited.  We currently have three others, who make up a total of six Board Members.

Board Meetings are held on Tuesdays at 6.00 p.m., usually lasting for an average of one hour, via Zoom.

The Treasurer presents the monthly Financial reports to the Board and provides advice and oversight of the Service’s financial governance to the Board including annual financial planning,  budgeting and the monitoring of income and expenditure and the annual audit.

The Treasurer is assisted in their role by the Service’s external Accountant and the Service Manager, for the monthly meetings and end of year preparations for the annual Audit.

We receive annual funding of approximately $300,000 from the Department of Communities and Justice.  The Service provides an annual acquittal to the Department, each October.

As a small service, with four part time employees, our financial activities are modest, straightforward, with an unblemished audit history.

About the organisation

Organisation name : Open Door Youth Housing Support Service Limited

We are one of the longest running Specialist Housing Support (SHS) services in NSW, and so we have a very proud history of providing support to young homeless people in the St. George and Sutherland areas, since 1983.

We are a specialist service, supporting young people who are managing their mental health, are newly arrived and/or who have complex needs.  We welcome referrals from First Nations young people.

We are a not for profit organisation and report to the ACNC, annually.

We have a contract with the Department of Communities and Justice, part of a three year term that runs until June 2024.

Our Service is one of numerous other Specialist Homelessness Services - SHS - in NSW, including Domestic Violence - DV and Homelessness NSW.  We operate in the St. George and Sutherland areas.

Our Service is free to all young people and to the service sector and the community.

Our Board is made up of six individuals who together, bring a broad range of skills and experience.

Our Board members are working or have had experience in the mental health, education, community services, employment services, financial management and the legal sectors.

While the Board takes the business of governing the Service very seriously, Board Meetings are a friendly, harmonious gathering of those committed to delivering a high quality service to our young clients.

We believe that every young person deserves safe housing, a sense of belonging within their community, freedom to make their own choices and the opportunities to become independent.

The Staff team is made up of our two highly skilled Caseworkers, and together with our Manager, are employed in part time positions.  With many years experience of working in the homelessness sector, our team is able to offer an uncommon depth of understanding of the issues affecting the young people who use our Service

Together with our Board, the Staff Team work in a spirit of mutual respect, to support our young clients towards positive outcomes, to build strong partnerships within the service sector and to work with our local community.

Sadly, our current Treasurer has let us know that he'll be leaving us soon, so we're seeking a new recruit to join our supportive Board.

If you think you might be interested, please feel welcome to contact me, Lynn Birnie, so we can arrange a time for a chat.
