About the role:
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) seeks individuals to serve as members of the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). The role of the HREC is to review research proposals involving human participants and determine whether it meets the National Statement for Ethical Conduct of Human Research requirements.The UNSW HRECs review research in environmental, health, material and fundamental sciences.
Expressions of interests are open for the following membership categories:
• Lay people have no affiliation with UNSW and do not currently engage in medical, scientific, legal or academic work.
• Professional care people with current experience in counselling and treating people (for example, a nurse, occupational therapist, chiropractor, pharmacist, physiotherapist, or osteopath).
• People who perform a pastoral care role in the community (for example, a Minister of Religion, Pastoral Care Worker, School Chaplain, Pastoral Care Coordinator, Religious Education Teacher, or Aboriginal Elder)
What does the role involve:
o HRECs meet on either the first Tuesday of the month or the third Tuesday.
o Meetings start at 1 pm and generally continue until 5 pm. The number of applications to be reviewed varies between 15 and 25 submissions per committee per month.
o Members assigned as lead or second reviewer for 2-3 human research submissions per month.
o Meeting papers are delivered electronically, and meetings are conducted using Microsoft Teams Meetings.
o Members are expected to complete all pre-reading before the meeting. Preparations for the meeting usually take between 5 – 10 hours a month.
o Members are appointed for a term of three years, with the possibility to renew membership for a maximum of one more term as decided by the DVCR.
o Proposals to share the role with another person will also be considered.
o Members appointed to this role are paid a monthly stipend for each meeting attended.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research & Enterprise (DVCRE) appoints all HREC members following a recommendation for appointment from the Presiding Member for Human Research Ethics and Director of RECS.
