About the role

About the Board

We have an active and committed Board that models supportive and mutually respectful governance and leadership. The Board meets by Zoom every two months on a Thursday at 5.00 pm (AEST), has sub-committees for Finance and Risk and  Fundraising, and has a Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee. In 2020 the Board converted from a Committee of Management to a Board of Directors.

Role and Expectations

Over the next 12 months the Board seeks to appoint up to 4 non-executive Directors. These are unpaid, honorary roles. We are looking to appoint individuals currently in senior roles and/or with substantial experience across one or more of the following areas: fundraising or philanthropy; public sector health; research or clinical work; pharmaceutical industry; or with relevant experience in an organisation working in a similar field to Emerge.

The new Directors will complement our existing Directors, expanding our skill base across areas that are relevant to the new Strategic Plan (Research, Education, Fundraising, Stakeholder Engagement or Government and Government Relations). The Board is looking to appoint people who will contribute to enhancing the Boards profile across areas of gender, age and cultural diversity and people with an understanding or lived experience of ME/CFS.

About the organisation

Organisation name : Emerge Australia Inc

Emerge Australia is a national organisation providing education, advocacy, research and support services for people living with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Our work gives hope and help to more than 250,000 Australians living with ME/CFS.

The impacts of ME/CFS can be devastating. It is estimated that 25% of people living with ME/CFS are housebound or bedbound, with many people living with these conditions unable to work or participate in community life. People living with ME/CFS often feel invisible due to the unknown cause of the conditions, lack of effective treatment options and limited community awareness, leading many to 'go missing' from their own lives.

Emerge Australia is committed to early diagnosis of ME/CFS in primary care. We promote management strategies helpful to improving quality of life for those with ME/CFS and its associated conditions.
