About the role

Our business is growing, our structure has changed and excitedly, Stage A Change is seeking compassionate, driven, impact-creating humans to join our board of directors. As a board member, you will play a critical role in shaping our organization’s foundation and direction, while driving change in the wider arts sector.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend board meetings (1 per month through 2023, then bi-monthly) and participate in decision-making processes
  • Actively contribute to the development and implementation of our strategic plan
  • Help identify and secure funding opportunities to support our programs
  • Serve as an ambassador for Stage A Change and promote our mission, values and offerings to the wider community
  • Actively engage with stakeholders and partners to build and strengthen relationships
  • Provide guidance and support to our directors and staff

Requirements:

  • Commitment to social justice and community empowerment
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in nonprofit, business, or public sectors
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Capacity to dedicate time and resources to support the organization’s goals
  • Working knowledge of community organising, governance, financial management, and/or legal compliance
  • Availability for a 2 year commitment

About the organisation

Organisation name : Stage A Change

Founded in 2017, Stage A Change is a not for profit (pending ACNC application), social enterprise dedicated to increasing, amplifying, and sustaining professional opportunities for First Nations artists and artists of color in Australia. In partnership and collaboration with community, industry, and artists, we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable arts sector. We create change in three ways: Community engagement, Artist Training and Industry Standards.

Our values of continuous learning, human as champions, boldly brave, deeply curious, and authentic in relationships guide our work and shape our culture.

Our artist training programs and community engagement activities are funded by our supporters and our industry standards Programming. Our advocacy work is directed and led by community, and our staff and board maintain a minimum representation of 66% people who are First Nations or BIPOC, or otherwise racialised.

Since 2018, Stage A Change has hosted several industry roundtable discussions, launched a training program in partnership with VCA, offered consultancy in anti-racism, DEI, and strategic planning, engaged in community outreach, facilitates pro-bono arts based mentorship, and has collected audience data to understand external stakeholder attitudes in reference to diversity within the sector.

In 2021, Stage A Change developed an industry-focused consultancy program, specifically created for live and visual arts practitioners and companies. This program enables independent artists, producers, creatives and organisations to initiate, develop, build and take action on best practices with regards to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, based on their project, vision, budget and goals.With 5 Core Workshops with topics ranging from Anti-Racism to Microaggressions to Conscious Collaborations, Stage A Change had shared our workshops with over 25 organisations and 500 people in the arts and not-for profit sector in Australia. Current and past clients include Malthouse Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Darlinghurst Theatre Company, LaBoite Theatre, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Oxfam, Westpac Foundation, Antipodes Theatre Company, Audiocraft and more!

In 2022, Stage A Change introduced the Changemakers, a cohort of arts organizations who are aligned with Stage A Change’s ABIDE principles, Access, Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, and are actively seeking to implement them into their organisation's structure. ChangeMakers acknowledge their responsibility, specifically to communities who have been historically excluded from their practice, to listen, to be accountable, and to lead the way towards a more accessible, equitable and inclusive sector.
