About the role

The Queensland Maritime Museum Association (‘QMMA’) is seeking to appoint experienced and visionary people to join our Board as Non-Executive Directors.   Expressions of interest are sought from people aligned with our objects and vision.  Applicants with the following skill sets would be highly regarded: 

  • Accounting, finance & investment 
  • Government relations 
  • Museum & galleries management 
  • Tourism & marketing 
  • Project management 
  • Planning & infrastructure 
  • Volunteer engagement & member relations 

 

About the role 

Per recent changes to our Constitution, the QMMA Board is now comprised of five (5) non-executive (appointed) directors and two (2) member-elected directors.   The non-executive director appointments are skill-based. 

Duties of the our Board Directors include, but are not limited to:  providing strong strategic leadership, vision and business acumen; monitoring the organisation’s performance against its strategic and business plans; keeping informed of external environments and factors which may impact upon and require change to the organisation’s activities; protect the human, financial and cultural assets and other resources of the organisation through effective governance and risk management; provide effective corporate governance to ensure that the organisation meets all performance, risk and compliance obligations;  promote and enhance the profile and objects of the organisation; regularly reviewing the organisation’s policies and implementing new policies as is necessary;  monitoring the organisation’s finances and solvency, and approving the annual business plan and budget; ensuring legislative and contractual compliance; acting honestly and in good faith, at all times, in the best interest of the organisation.

This is an exciting, transformational time to join our Board.  You are motivated to be a part of this journey and to share your experience, energy and networks.  You are keen to contribute to and enhance our not-for-profit organisation and have real interest in supporting and celebrating the cultural and heritage value of our proud collection.   

While all expressions of interest will be considered, we are particularly seeking directors with the necessary qualifications, professional and governance experience to lead the QMMA into the next chapter.   As a not-for-profit entity, running a privately-owned museum and serving a diverse and passionate membership, applicants that could contribute the following competencies to our Board would be highly regarded:  visionary thinking with a positive, ‘growth’ mindset; high level strategic and business acumen; sound level of financial literacy; strong risk management skills;  ability to seamlessly transition into Board business and planning;  team player with an ability to respectfully and constructively question strategy and process; strong and authentic leadership qualities; well-developed communication skills.     

Previous Board experience will be highly regarded, as will Graduate recognition from professional governance bodies, such as the Australian Institute of Company Directors or the Governance Institute of Australia.

 The QMMA is a public company limited by guarantee and is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (‘ACNC’).   The main activity of the QMMA is the preservation and display of our collection through the operation of our privately-owned Queensland Maritime Museum.   Through the museum, we achieve our vision of connecting people with the maritime heritage of Queensland and the world.   We aim to provide an enjoyable and memorable destination; offer dynamic interactive displays that both educate and entertain; share stories of our maritime culture and heritage; enrich our unique and significant collection; and connect with our community.   The museum is principally run as a volunteer-based organisation.  We have a band of long-serving, dedicated and passionate volunteers that serve the museum in a diverse number of roles from tour guides, IT support, graphic design, marketing, shop assistants, membership services and grounds/operational works.
